Why is this meditation beneficial to me and my dog?
For the last few decades the practice of meditation has become more popular in the West. The practice of being in the present moment has been talked about frequently in books and on television. What is this big thing about “being present” ? What does it matter?
Most of us human beings are sleep walking with our eyes open. We go through our daily routines, often not even questioning why we do the things we do, even if we don’t like our lives and are complaining, hoping that one day things will change. We go about our day doing our things, usually being completely lost in thoughts, running after the demands of our minds, being stuck in the past or lost in the future, totally missing the gifts and beauty life has to offer in the very moment. When we ‘paws’ and take a breather, we can start to see that we do have a choice, that we can do things differently, that we can create the life we want, starting with our mindset. We actually can experience the Present called Now, through the Gift called Dog.
Our canine friends have not lost this art of being present. When they sniff something, that’s the only thing they do in that moment without distractions of a busy mind. When they chase something, call their name as you will, they won’t listen to you as that’s all their doing in that moment; chasing. They simply won’t hear or see anything else. Now THAT is being present!
"Life is now. There was never a time when your life was not now, nor will there ever be" – Eckhart Tolle
